City-based activist Nafeesa Ismail was bestowed with the Karmaveer Puraskaar for her social service at iCONGO’s REX Conclave at New Delhi. The award is a national people's award for social justice and action instituted by the citizens of India. Nafeesa, a lawyer by profession, after a stint heading legal departments of top corporates in telecom and banking sectors, plunged into social activism to rekindle her latent desire to serve the society, by launching an NGO named Marg Foundation in 2007.

The foundation works for child rights, women empowerment and health. She was involved with BPW India, a UN initiative to develop women entrepreneurs, as the president of the Hyderabad chapter. Conferring the Karmaveer Puraskaar on Nafeesa Ismail, iCONGO stated, “We congratulate Nafeesa Ismail for possessing the conviction and compassion to stand up, speak out and lead the change with her positive attitude!”

The management of iCONGO said that they were glad to have found a true champion of social justice and wish that more citizens gave their time and involvement towards addressing social justice issues and being the change and role models for other citizens to follow. Eminent recipients of the award in the past include agriculture scientist MS Swaminathan; former chief election commissioner SY Quraishi; author William Dalrymple; business honcho Anu Aga; theatre artiste Alyque Padamsee; actor Anupam Kher; actress Kajol Devgan and others.
