The Pt Bhimsen Joshi Festival by Suranjali at Taramati Bardari had a stellar hour-long Odissi performance by the students of Guru Ratikant Mohapatra. The illustrious tradition of the legendary guru Padma Vibhushan awardee Kelucharan Mohapatra is being carried on by his son, Ratikant, in a spectacular manner.

Dressed in simple cream and sky blue, the grace and fluidic motions of the artistes enthralled the audience. Being the solitary male artiste, he acquitted himself well. Ardhanareeswara, a form blending Lord Siva in his male and female avatars, was an especially outstanding piece in the Odissi repertoire. In the hands of a master choreographer like Ratikant, it offered ample scope for fast paced nritta. The balanced poise of the artistes and their dexterity elicited rapt attention.

The item “Vande Mataram” gave the audience an opportunity to see Kelucharan’s superb mastery of the art. The originality of the composition bearing his master touch was evident. Coming together in statuesque poses, the dancers were like sculptures from an ancient temple that had come to life. The formation of groups in stunning poses was the highlight of the night.

The final piece was an ode to the idea of all religions being one thus depicting the unity of all mankind. Suranjali has to be thanked for giving the audience the opportunity of enjoying a series of synchronised performances on stage. Flawless maintenance of tribhanga and chowk poses despite the dazzling speed with which the dancers moved was commendable.
