The group, which called itself the Islamic State Hacking Division, claimed that it had obtained the information by hacking into servers and databases but U.S. officials said that most of the data was in the public domain.
A U.S. defence official said that the validity of the information has not been ascertained and added that they were looking into it.
A spokesman for the U.S. Navy 's law enforcement agency said that the personnel named by the IS on the list have been asked to check their online footprint and adjust their privacy settings.
