Warangal Urban: Progressive Organisation of Women (POW) leader B Rama Sundari has stressed the need to recognise women’s role in peoples’ movements.

She said women have made great sacrifices and contribution towards success of numerous peoples’ movement that the country witnessed in recent times. But their role in the victory of such movements has always been neglected and was not recorded.

Even the revolutionary organisations that were fighting for the cause of suppressed people’s rights have failed to focus on studying the problems of women and role played by women in such fights, she felt.

Rama Sundari has addressed a gathering of women at the state-level political training classes organised in Warangal on Sunday. She explained the participation of women in Telangana armed struggle, Srikakulam tribal farmers struggle and various nationalist movements.

She asked the POW members to draw inspiration from women warriors like Jhansi Laxmi Bai, Chakali Ilamma, Kamala Devi, Panchadi Nirmala, Jhankari Bai and others and move forward in their fight against patriarchal system in the country.

The POW state president V Sandhya and its state executive member Nirmala explained challenges before the women’s identity movements and suppression they were being subjected to by patriarchal forces.

They suggested building active women’s groups towards a constructive fight to protect their rights.

Agitations should be taken up to fulfill the expectations of women in the newly-formed State of Telangana, to fight against effects on women of the new economic policies, demanding equal opportunities in all fields and economic empowerment of women, they added.

CPI(ML) New Democracy leader M Venkanna, IFTU leader Anuradha, POW secretary B Anasuya and others were present.
