Speaking at a meeting after paying homage to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 27th death anniversary here, Vikramarka said Rajiva Gandhi had strived to fulfil Mahatma Gandhi’s wish to achieve Gram Swaraj. He had laid foundation for strengthening the Panchayat Raj set-up, he said. He recalled that Rajiv Gandhi, when he was the Prime Minister, had ensured that the gram panchayats got funds directly from the Centre.
The Congress leader said the TRS government on the pretext of bringing reforms to the Panchayat Raj Act had in fact been trying to destabilise the set-up. The TRS government introduced programmes like ‘Mana Vooru-Mana Pranalika’ and ‘Grama Jyothi,’ but failed to release the funds.
Moreover, the TRS government had been depriving the Central funds released to the Gram Panchayats through Finance Commission.
He appealed to people to extend their support to the Congress and ensure that the TRS is defeated in the next elections. He also urged sarpanches, MPTC’s, ZPTC’s, Zilla Parishad Chairpersons to extend their support to Congress party to restore the lost glory to the Panchayat Raj set-up.
Congress leaders Potal Nageshwar Rao, Puvvalla Durga Prasad, Kotta Sitharamulu, Darishala Bhadraiah, Bala Gangadar Tilak, V Narasimha Rao, Md. Tajuddin, Md. Fazal, Md. Javed and Bandi Vinod were present at the programme.
