Venu Lanka VegitablesVijayawada: The much publicised scheme of '9 vegetables @ Rs 99' has no takers in the city. Neither consumers nor farmers are happy with the scheme. L Durga Kumari, a housewife, said: "The scheme introduced by government is not up to the mark. The package includes undesirable quantities of tomatoes, onions, potatoes, cabbage and others varieties. Many vegetables offered under the scheme are not used regularly in large quantities. Quality of vegetables is also inferior." The Marketing Department is monitoring the scheme being offered at Rythu Bazars. In an attempt to contain the skyrocketing prices of vegetables, the department was supplying vegetables in the special package. The package consists of tomatoes, potatoes and onions (one kg each) and other varieties depending on their availability. Bali Chakravarti, estate officer of Rythu Bazar at Swarajya Maidan here, said: "Marketing Department has clearly instructed us to supply vegetable package at a fixed price of Rs 99. We are seeking the help of farmers to supply all the nine varieties at that price tag. No subsidy was given by Government on this package. Farmers are voluntarily extending their support." But farmers dispute this version of officials. N Subramanyam, a farmer said: "Government is asking us to sell vegetables directly to officials at a price which is less than the market price. Production of vegetables in this region has come down due to the power cuts and adverse weather. Cost of vegetable cultivation is very high. As a result, the prices in market are skyrocketing. Farmers are bearing losses for the sake of Government." The Communist Party of India- Marxist (CPM) has demanded the Government to bear the subsidy under this package. Party city secretary Ch Babu Rao said that the Government was concentrating more on publicising schemes rather than their foolproof implementation. Government officials and the Congress legislators had created a lot of hype on this scheme owning it as their credit. But the actual thing was the Government till date did not spend a single rupee on this scheme. No subsidy was offered to farmers under the scheme. Farmers were burdened. In spite of supporting farmers, the Government was imposing additional burden on them. If the government was genuine on its claim of being pro-farmer, it should offer a subsidy of Rs 40 on the vegetables supplied under the package, he demanded.
