Vijayawada: The two-day bandh call given by the Samaikyandhra Joint Action Committee (JAC) in Krishna district evoked a good response as people observed bandh voluntarily to make it a success on Wednesday. All the associations and people’s organizations have supported the 48-hour bandh. Dharnas, rasta roko and hunger protests marked the day. Various associations representing all sections of society expressed solidarity with the Samaikyandhra supporters.
The student JAC took out a motor cycle rally in support of the bandh. The Vijayawada Crane Owners Workers Welfare Association organized a huge protest at Benz circle with as many as 80 cranes put together. Student JAC took out a bike rally. Traffic came to a halt at many junctions because of the protests. The police diverted traffic to ease the vehicular movement.
Meanwhile, the Vastralatha Textiles Association members conducted `Vanta-Varpu’ programme in support of the agitation. Muslim JAC sat for indefinite hunger strike at Panja center in One Town. All educational institutions, private enterprises, shops, hotels and restaurants expressed their support by downing the shutters. Petrol bunks opened partially.
The bandh was a success in all the villages and towns in the district.After the employees of APSRTC went on strike, auto drivers ruled the roost by making a fast buck. The Samaikyandhra activists made sure that no auto or any kind of public transport move on the roads. The activists deflated tyres of the vehicles to enforce total bandh. Commuters were put to hardship because of the non-availability of transportation. They faced trouble in reaching their destination. Sudden downpour added to their woes.
