Harsh Vardhan Shringla appointed new Indian Ambassador to US
Seasoned diplomat Harsh Vardhan Shringla was Thursday appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the United States
New Delhi : Seasoned diplomat Harsh Vardhan Shringla was Thursday appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the United States.
Shringla, a 1984-batch Indian Foreign Service diplomat will succeed Navtej Sarna.
"He is expected to take up the assignment shortly," the Ministry of External Affairs said.
At present, Shringla is serving as Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh.
In the course of a diplomatic career spanning 34 years, Shringla has held a variety of positions in New Delhi and abroad.
Before his assignment in Bangladesh, he served as Ambassador of India to Thailand.
He has also served at Unesco in France, at the UN in New York, besides serving in various capacities in Vietnam, Israel and South Africa.
Shringla has served in the Ministry headquarters in New Delhi as Joint Secretary (Director General) responsible for Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Maldives.
He has also headed the UN Political and South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (Saarc) divisions in the Ministry.
Earlier, he served as Director of the Northern Division dealing with Nepal and Bhutan and as Deputy Secretary of the Europe West Division.
Shringla, a graduate from St. Stephen's College in New Delhi, worked in the corporate and public sectors in India prior to joining the Indian Foreign Service.
Riva Ganguly Das to replace Shringla
Senior diplomat Riva Ganguly Das, presently Director General of Indian Council for Cultural Relations, has been appointed as new High Commissioner to Bangladesh.
Das was the Director General of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR). A 1986 batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Das is expected to take up her new assignment shortly, according to a statement issued by the External Affairs Ministry.
Das's appointment assumes significance as Bangladesh is seen as a crucial neighbour under New Delhi's Neighbourhood First Policy.
A postgraduate in political science from Delhi University, she was a lecturer at Delhi University prior to joining the IFS.
Her first posting was in Spain. Thereafter, she was at the Ministry headquarters in New Delhi, dealing with external publicity, Nepal and passport/visa work.
