The DMK and the Congress on Wednesday said they have finalised an agreement to jointly contest upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The Congress would be contesting ten parliamentary seats - nine from TN and one from Puducherry out of total 40 Lok Sabha seats in TN and Puducherry. The Congress had contested 10 seats in TN as part of the DMK-led alliance in 2004.In 2009, the Congress contested 16 seats in the alliance.
The two parties contested separately in 2014 and failed to win any seat in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. A total of 37 of the 39 seats in TN were won by the AIADMK while the PMK and BJP won one seat each. Learning from the past, the two parties announced the alliance which possibly may be a harbinger of defeat for the BJP-AIADMK-PMK alliance in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
