Warangal Best Heritage city; GHMC, Convention Centre, Hyderabad & Vizag airports and Apollo Hospital get Awards, besides AP being the best tourist destination Venkat Parsa ap1New Delhi: Andhra Pradesh has bagged seven National Tourism Awards, which will be presented by President Pranab Mukherjee at a function in the Vigyan Bhavan on March 18. Union Tourism Minister K Chiranjeevi said Warangal had bagged the Best Heritage City Award. Andhra Pradesh was selected for the Major Tourism Destination Award and for Comprehensive Development of Tourism Award. Best Airport Award has gone to the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad and the Visakhapatnam Airport. The International Convention Centre in Hyderabad got the award in the Best Convention Centre category. The Best Civic Management of Tourist Destination has gone to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation. The Best Medical Facilities Award has gone to Apollo Hospitals in Hyderabad. Warangal Fort is one of the architectural wonders of the bygone era. Sited in south-east of Warangal city, the massive structure was built in the 13th century by rulers of the Kakatiya dynasty. Though presently in ruins, Warangal Fort still boasts of the dexterity of artists of earlier times. Chiranjeevi said the Tourism Ministry had also announced a Special Best Tourism Film Award for Yann Martel, author of the Book, "Life of Pi," for promoting India (Puducherry and Munnar) through the extraordinary visual presentation of the scenic beauty of the locales through the film. Cinema had emerged as a powerful tool for the development and promotion of tourist destinations, he said. The Tourism Ministry chose him and later the prestigious Oscar Award was given to him. "This only shows the high standards of the National Tourism Awards," remarked Chiranjeevi. Announcing the prestigious UNWTO Conference in Hyderabad on April 12, 13 and 14, Chiranjeevi said the twin blasts would not have any impact on it. "The best answer to terrorism is tourism," Chiranjeevi said. Asked whether the Telangana agitation would impact the upcoming event in Hyderabad, he gave full credit to the people of Telangana, saying they realise the importance of the event and will do nothing to disturb it. He pointed out how in the past the Bio-Diversity Convention had passed off successfully in the City.
