New Delhi: The Telangana issue did not figure either in the meeting of the Union Cabinet meeting on Friday morning. The Congress Core Group, slated for the evening, did not materialize, as Congress President Sonia Gandhi was not present. Since Hyderabad was the key issue to be discussed and it was not possible in the absence of Sonia Gandhi, the discussion finally did not materialize. In fact, the Congress Core Group is chaired by Sonia Gandhi and in her absence, it could not take place.

According to sources, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who chaired the evening meeting, was attended, among others, by Finance Minister P Chidambaram, External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid and Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia. Focus of the meeting was the upcoming visit of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to the United States.

Since the Prime Minister is leaving early next week, there is still a possibility of the Congress Core Group meeting being held on Saturday. However, there is no confirmation available in this regard. Primarily, the crux of the matter on which the Telangana process is stuck is status of Hyderabad. If once the Centre can identify what is to be done with Hyderabad, then the process of carving out Telangana can be hastened. For any meaningful discussion to take place, it is being pointed out that the presence of Congress President Sonia Gandhi is inescapable.

Earlier, AICC Spokesman P C Chacko reiterated, “There is no question of revising or going back on any decisions which is taken but the thing is that even while we have taken a decision on Telangana.” Chacko admitted that there are issues. That is why the MPs who are Congress people and very important Congress leaders also behave in a difficult situation. “We can understand. Understanding that situation, we are trying to bring things to an amicable situation.”
P C Chacko further said, “Antony Committee is going into the matter. Shinde is preparing the Cabinet Note. Both should be there. Only the timing is the problem. Antony Committee is talking to people from both regions. They are trying to understand and arrive at a common solution. There are certain issues. If it is sorted out, probably the issue can be sorted to a great extent. That is one way of doing it. At the same time, the government has also got a certain responsibility. This is not contradictory.”
