Mumbai: Republican Party of India chief Ramdas Athawale, who met Uddhav Thackeray here on Friday, said the Shiv Sena is ready to form an alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for government formation in Maharashtra.

"No talks took place regarding the chief minister`s post. The BJP will hold talks after two days," Athawale told media here after the meeting.

"He confirmed to me that his party is willing to form an alliance with the BJP, as they do not have any other alternative," he added.

Athawale further said that he has requested the Shiv Sena supremo to forget the past and take decisions in favour of the people of Maharashtra.

The BJP and Shiv Sena had parted ways ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly polls over seats sharing.

The BJP has emerged as the single-largest party in Maharashtra winning 122 of the 288 seats. The Shiv Sena finished second with 63 seats. The ruling Congress was decimated in the elections.

The BJP has, however, not yet revealed its cards despite Sharad Pawar`s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) offering to extend it outside support to form the government in the state.
