BJP keeps all options open, A day after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) put up its best performance in Jammu and Kashmir winning 25 seats.

Confident of forming govt, says it has support of 31 MLAs

New Delhi: A day after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) put up its best performance in Jammu and Kashmir winning 25 seats, three short of the PDP which emerged as the single largest party in the Northern state, the saffron party on Wednesday claimed that it will form the government and that it already has the support of 31 MLAs.

Apart from the 25-BJP MLAs, the BJP has claimed that it has support from Sajjad Gani Lone-led People's Conference Party, Independent MLA Pawan Gupta, who won from Udhampur constituency, Asgar Ali Karbalaie (Kargil) and two other independent MLAs. With support of 31 MLAs, the party said it has become the single largest party in the State and will claim the CM post. While talking to mediapersons, a party's spokesperson said talks with PDP (28 seats) and National Conference (12 seats) are underway.

On Tuesday, the election results threw up a fractured verdict. The BJP, riding on Modi-wave, had more than doubled its seats from 11 in 2008 to 25 now, while the PDP went up from 21 to 28.

Meanwhile, it’s a catch-22 situation for the National Conference and the Peoples Democratic Party as the fractured mandate has given the controlling handle to the BJP that has 25 seats. With second-placed BJP appearing to be their sole saviour, both NC and its arch rival PDP are caught in a cleft stick.

With 15 seats, the National Conference (NC) is out of power, but it has an option of supporting the BJP and thereby keeping its arch-rival, PDP, out of power for the next six years. PDP's dilemma is even bigger. With 28 seats it has fallen short of its estimated projection of getting closer to 44, the simple majority needed to form the government.

The PDP's problem is also compounded by the fact that its most likely future ally, the Congress, has got just 12 seats. The two together have only 40 seats -- still short of the vaunted mark by four.

There are seven independents who have won. Two of these are with Sajad Lone's People's Conference whose proximity to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is well known.
