New Delhi: BJP leader and advisor to the Union Water Resources Ministry Vedire Sriram is appointed as the member of the Interlinking Task Force which was set up in compliance with the decision of the Union Cabinet. The Task Force on Interlinking of Rivers comprising experts and senior officials will look into the issues relating to Interlinking of Rivers (ILR) in the country.
Vedire Sriram is appointed as the member of this high powered task force that would from now on facilitate the Interlinking of Rivers programme in the country. The committee will be chaired by B N Navalawala and other expert members of the committee are Prodipto Ghosh, former secretary, Ministry of Environment and Forests, A D Mohile, former chairman, Central Water Commission (CWC), M Gopalakrishnan, former member, Central Water Commission and Virag Gupta, Advocate.
Other members are senior officials from the Central ministries of Water Resources, Rural Development National Water Development Agency. The appointment of Vedire Sriram in the Task Force is crucial as many states in the country, especially from south India, are apprehensive of the implementation of the interlinking of rivers as they feel that there is no surplus water in their respective basins.
As adviser in the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, Sriram Vedire has been participating in the Ganga River clean up project and also studied the Himalayan Rivers like Brahmaputra and Ganga. He is well versed on issues related to bringing water from the rivers in Nepal and Bhutan into Indian rivers.
The Task Force will provide guidance on norms of appraisal of individual projects in respect of economic viability, socio-economic, environmental impacts and preparation of resettlement plans. It would also device suitable mechanisms for bringing about speedy consensus amongst the states and also proposes suitable organisational structure for implementing the Interlinking of Rivers.
