Parliament members have had the perks to spend a subsidy of Rs 60.70 crore only for the culinary delight in the past five years. The MPs and members of the Parliament are served meals cooked on demand in Parliament canteens run by the Northern Railways.


The canteens at the parliament are priced at abnormally cheaper rates with a mutton curry sold at Rs 20, masala dosa at Rs 6, Fish fried with chips come at just Rs 25 and boiled vegetables, the MPs delight themselves while people struggling with the soaring high prices of green vegetables, is sold at just Rs 6. Around 76 mouth-watering varieties of meals that are served to the MPs are sold at highly-subsidised rates, revealed an RTI reply.


With some meals are funded to the extent of 88 percent of the cost while others range from 63 percent to 83 percent. The MPs relish stew vegetables that come at Rs 41.25 by paying just Rs 4 as 90 percent of the cost is paid from the taxpayers’ money.


The RTI reply further revealed that during the years 2009-10, 2010-11, 2012-13, 2013-14 - canteens received a subsidy of Rs 10.4 crore, Rs 11.7 crore, Rs 11.9 crore, Rs 12.5 crore and Rs 14 crore totaling to Rs 60.7 crore.
