Another case of medical negligence has surfaced in Maharashtra as 14 people lost their eyesight at Washim civil district hospital after a cataract surgery. The reports state that five employees including a medical superintendent, an ophthalmic surgeon and three ophthalmic officers have been suspended for negligence.

Last week, 23 patients were transferred to the JJ Hospital in Mumbai to determine if their vision could be restored but only nine cases were termed as successful. Tests revealed that the hospital used eye swabs that contained infectious bacteria resulting in the infections getting contracted due to unclean medical equipment.

The contaminated surgical instruments is said to be the cause for bacterial infection, revealed the preliminary investigations.
