The city’s, Joint Commissioner of Police - Traffic Milind Bharambe launched the #MySafetyMyLife campaign in partnership with city-based NGO, V Citizens Action Network (VCAN) at Social Media Week Mumbai today.
The campaign aims to bring together the Mumbai Traffic Police and citizens to address road safety concerns across Mumbai. It marks a significant step towards synergizing the efforts of the city’s Traffic Police and citizens to address a civic issue of concern. Being a digital campaign, it has greater relevance and reach and added potential to impact ordinary Mumbaikars and influence them to adopt positive road and traffic behaviour.
Speaking at the launch, Indrani Malkani from VCAN said, “We recognize that an improvement in road safety can only come about through an active and involved citizenry. Social Media Week Mumbai is an appropriate launch pad for the #MySafetyMyLife campaign as it will help us drive home the importance of adhering to traffic regulations to reduce fatalities and accidents.“
With an exponential rise in road traffic leading to an increase in accidents, road safety has become a public health concern both within the city as well as across the country. The United Nations has announced 2011-20 as the Decade of Action on Road Safety as demises, disability and hospitalization due to road accidents are an increasing socio-economic burden worldwide.
Rohit Varma, Director of Social Media Week Mumbai added, “This launch is one of the key highlights of Social Media Week Mumbai and we are proud to be a part of this timely initiative. It demonstrates beautifully how advances in communications technology can be leveraged for social good.”
At the launch, Milind Bharambe shared insights into how citizens can contribute to the #My Safety My Lifeinitiative and accepted suggestions on how Mumbai’s traffic police can improve road safety for the city’s dwellers. This was followed by an interactive session with the attendees.
