Allahabad : The devotees took a holy dip in river Ganges today, marking the last full moon of winter according to the Hindu calendar.
The devotees in Uttar Pradesh thronged Sangam in Allahabad, believed to be the confluence of two rivers Ganges and Yamuna, to take a holy dip and offer prayers on the occasion of full moon day or 'Poush Purnima'.
The devotees were seen wading in waist-deep waters to offer the prayers.
"It is said that if heart, body and soul synchronise at the Sangam, the person attains moksha (salvation) and is detached from all the bad karmas (deeds) committed in this birth and previous births as well," said a Hindu devotee.
The full moon day also marks the beginning of Kalpwas (the period of austerity), which is done throughout the month of Magha (eleventh month of Hindu calendar).
"I am here to observe a month-long 'Kalpwas' and have resolved to observe it throughout the month. We are chanting 'Ram-Naam ka Jaap' and reading Ramayana," said a holy man.
