Chandigarh: The Haryana Government has decided to celebrate the birthday of girl students across all state-run schools through the programme 'Kanya Janamdin Utsav' which will be launched on Thursday.

A spokesperson of the Haryana's education department said, "The birthday of girls falling in the same month would be celebrated as 'Utsav' on every second Tuesday. These girls' parents and the Panchayat members will also remain present during the event."

Census 2011 computes a highly skewed sex-ratio of 879 women per 1000 men for Haryana. However, the state recently noted improvement with the number of girls crossing 900 mark for the month of December, a development which happened for the first time in a decade.
