A LoE, letter of exchange was sent to India, which asked for the removal of one of the stationed choppers from the Laamu atoll.

The LoE expired last month, but Male’ asked India to remove both of the choppers, as the Abdulla Yameen government is upset about the presence of the stationed Indian navy.

The Maldives ambassador to India has given no reaction to this issue.Laamu is significant because China has plans to build a port at the location, Addu is also significant as it is located at Equatorial Channel and close to Diego Garcia.

If the removal of both the choppers takes place then, India would lose two strategic locations of its footprint.
