New Delhi: How will you react if your partner gives you a list of things he wants from you just in case your marriage doesn't work? Well, after Maneka Gandhi raised her voice for recognising prenups in the country, this issue is taking a hype.
Legally defined, Prenup is a contract a couple enters before their marriage, civil union or any other agreement prior to the main agreement by the people intending to marry or contract with each other. The content of a prenuptial agreement can vary widely, but commonly includes provisions for division of property and spousal support in the event of divorce or breakup of marriage.
This has divided the society into two parts as few think prenups can ruin the relationship while others think it is good to know your partner's expectations before hands, but there are few who are not aware of what prenups are.
When asked what she thinks about prenups, a young graduate said that she will never do it as she finds it stupid because listing her needs before getting into a relationship will not let her be comfortable with her partner.
Meanwhile, a middle aged management worker said that he won't mind telling his requirements to his partner, adding that it makes things easier between the two because the other person already knows what his partner is expecting just in case their marriage doesn't work before marriage.
A mother of two, who is looking eligible girls for her son, said that prenups kill the essence of marriage, they not only distance the couple, but also fill their mind with fear that their relation might not work.
However, many graduation students think that recognising prenups is a good thing because it will bring in security to their relation.
So, will it help both spouses especially women to get their right to maintenance or marital property without a cumbersome, expensive legal battle after separation or will it destroy the relation before it starts.
