Shanghai: Roger Federer brushed aside world number one Rafael Nadal 6-4, 6-3 to win the Shanghai Masters on Sunday and register his fourth victory of the year over his Spanish rival.

The Swiss world number two beat Nadal in the finals of the Australian Open and Miami Masters and in the last 16 at Indian Wells earlier this year, and never looked like losing to his long-time rival in Shanghai, firing 10 aces as he cruised to victory.

Federer, the only man who can still stop Nadal ending the year as number one, took an hour and 12 minutes to claim his sixth title of the year and his second Shanghai crown with a clinical performance.

It is his second Shanghai crown (2014) and 27th at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 level. The 36-year-old world No 2 broke once in each set to emerge triumphant and register his 15 victory over Nadal.

"I wasn't here last year because of injuries, so it's just so, so nice to be back in Shanghai," Federer said. "It's a wonderful moment for me to be back here playing against my good friend and rival, Rafa... We didn't think maybe we were going to have the year we did.

Federer has won all four meeting between the two this year. In each of Federer's three previous victories over Nadal this season - at the Australian Open and ATP World Tour Masters 1000 events in Indian Wells and Miami - the Swiss won more than 75 per cent of first serve points.

His delivery was on song once again in Sunday's final, claiming 83 per cent of total service points in closing out the first set at 6-4 after breaking in the opening game. The second set featured more vintage Federer. The second seed scored a stunning drop volley winner and forced Nadal to misfire on a forehand to claim the break for a 3-2 lead.

Executing his gameplan to perfection throughout the 71-minute affair, he sealed victory on his second match-point when a Nadal forehand found the net. Federer, who won the tournament in 2014, has enjoyed himself on the fast courts of Shanghai this year, while Nadal will look back on a successful stint in Asia after winning last week's China Open.
