Hyderabad: The Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) emerged triumphant in the indirect elections to the municipal chairpersons and the corporation mayor posts on Thursday. Several of Congress councillors in Telangana backed the ruling party, helping it romp home in the elctions.
The elections were comparatively less violent in Telangana, as compared to those in Andhra Pradesh. An incident of kidnapping was reported from Karimnagar where a TRS councillor Uma Rani and her husband Prabhakar were allegedly abducted by the rival parties.
The ruling party won all the three mayor posts and 22 of its candidates won chairperson elections in 50 municipalities. Congress won 20, TDP four, BJP three and MIM one municipal chairperson posts. Elections for the chairpersons of Nalgonda and Suryapeta municipalities were postponed due to lack of quorum and they would be held on Friday. Sardar Ravindar Singh of TRS was elected the Mayor of Karimnagar Municipal Corporation, while Akula Sujatha won the Mayoral election in Nizamabad. K Lakshminarayana, an independent, became the Mayor of Ramagundam and extended his support to the TRS.
