Hyderabad: Technical snag that developed in the Ramagundam NTPC plant and the sudden rise in the consumption of power due to heat wave conditions led to unscheduled power cuts in many areas of state capital and other parts of Telangana on Friday.

Several villages, towns and municipalities in Nalgonda, Mahbubnagar and Medak experienced power cuts for about 12 hours. Officials said the technical glitch in the second unit of the NTPC plant resulted in the problem. The second unit has an installed capacity of 500 mw. The techincal snag resulted in loss of 200 MW power to Telangana. However, the snag has now been rectified.

In Greater Hyderabad limits, the demand for power registered upward trend due to prevailing heat conditions forcing the power utilities to impose power cuts for more than six hours in two spells. Following the snag another two-hour power cut was imposed.

According to officials of power utilities, if the power demand further increases, the crisis would be aggravated in the coming days. At present the demand for power in Telangana was 100 MU (million units) but the utilities are able to meet the demand upto 80 MU only leaving a deficit of 20 MU.
