Hyderabad: Apart from the political implications of transfer of seven mandals from Bhadrachalam to Andhra Pradesh, the government of Telangana has another major cause of worry as it will be losing 139 sq kms of forest land and it has no clue whatsoever about who will compensate for the loss.

It is estimated that in all about 10,000 acres of forest land (139.34 square km) in Khammam district will go to AP from the day the centre issues the gazette notification.

Head of the Forest Force and Telangana Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) SBL Mishra told The Hans India that the government did not receive any communication from the union ministry of Forests and Environment with regard to the compensation the State of Telangana would get for losing 13.95 percent of its forest cover.

The officials of the forest department said that the forest cover in Telangana has already been reduced to 21,759 sq km from 22,010 sq km losing 251 sq km in the last two years due to blatant violation of forest acts, wild fires and encroachments and negligence by the previous governments.

The sources said, AP State Reorganisation Act 2014 does not mention anything about the compensation aspect. Though there are some provisions in the forest act which say that the affected state should be compensated with the land equal to the forest land given to other state, the transfer of seven mandals is a special case and the State Reorganisation Act has not made any mention of it.

Compensation in lieu of forest land, it appears will be at the sole discrimination of the centre, officials said. Interestingly, the state government, they say has also not given a thought to this aspect as yet.

Meanwhile, Mahbubabad MP A Sitaram Naik said the environmental imbalance was inevitable in Telangana in the coming years as the forest cover in the new state would be reduced by 30 per cent. The state would also lose some benefits provided under centrally sponsored afforestation schemes.
