Warangal: Batukamma festival is a festival that connects members of all communities and religions, said Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee member B Prabhakar Reddy.

He said the tradition of celebrating Batukamma festival is unique to Telangana and hence efforts to protect it should be made in all its earnestness. In the recent past the festival has been losing its sheen, he lamented.

The event has been organised by Telangana Badminton Association and Sports Authority Warangal unit at Indoor Stadium in Hanamkonda on Sunday.

Prabhakar Reddy who inaugurated the celebrations, has opined that the State government’s decision to celebrate the festival officially would give a fillip to the tradition. Efforts should be made by the people to continue the secular celebration of the festival involving all. Speaking on the occasion, senior journalist P V Madanmohan noted that Batukamma festival, which holds great significance to women in Telangana, has risen above the caste and religious affiliations and unites all.

He lauded Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao’s decision to announce the festival as state festival and for allocating Rs 10 crore towards conducting the festival in grand manner across the state.

Women from Tibet and Madhya Pradesh have attended the celebrations. Badminton Association officer bearers, Srinivas Reddy, G Keshava Murthy, Pavan, Sampath, Dr. Srinivas, Vijay Kumar, Dr. Jayaraj, badminton coach Sridhar, sportspersons Kalyani, Swaroopa, Anusha, Neeraja and others were present.
