Hyderabad: The Supreme Court on Monday questioned the Telangana government on why it had to discriminate some colleges from participating in the engineering web counselling.

  • SC to TS: Why some colleges were discriminated?
  • Directs govt to file affidavit by Thursday
  • Hearing adjourned to October 27

Hearing that a petition was filed by 174 Telangana engineering colleges, that were barred from the first phase of engineering counselling, the apex court said that in order to give equal opportunity to everyone; it gives an extension till August 31 to complete the counselling process.

The Supreme Court directed the Telangana government to file an affidavit by October 17 and adjourned the hearing to October 27.

It may be noted that 174 Telangana engineering colleges were weeded out a day before the commencement of web counselling citing lack of infrastructure and faculty. The colleges which moved the High Court got a conditional clearance to participate in the counselling. However, they could not participate as the first phase had concluded.

Later, the Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education which moved the Supreme Court seeking permission to conduct the second of phase counselling received a jolt as the apex court refused to grant permission.

The apex court denying permission had poured cold water over 75,000 students who were hoping for a better college in the second phase counselling.
