Karimnagar: TPCC President Ponnala Lakshmaiah on Friday flayed the TRS government for ignoring the welfare of farmers.

Telangana Congress leaders staged a Maha Dharna in front of the District Collectorate here, demanding solution to the problems being faced by the farmers. Speaking on the occasion, Lakshmaiah claimed that KCR had faced the ire of farmers when he visited his Gajwel Assembly constituency within four days after the TRS formed the government in the State. The farmers, he said, would teach the TRS party a lesson, he felt.

He expressed concern over farmers committing suicide unable to bear financial difficulties. Stating that the Congress party would stand by the farmers, he appealed to them not to commit suicide. The Congress party, whether in government or not, always stood by the people, he said.

Senior Congress leader D Srinivas described the Congress party as farmers’ party. He said the previous Congress government always focused on implementing schemes for the welfare of farmers.

Former minister D Sridhar Babu warned that the Congress party would not tolerate if the State government deprived eligible persons of welfare schemes.

Former Karimnagar MP Ponnam Prabhakar suggested to Chief Minister Chandrasekhar Rao that instead of focusing on turning Hyderabad into cities like New York and London, he should focus his attention on solving the problems of farmers. He lambasted the TRS government for failing to fulfill its promise of waiving off farm loans. He flayed the government for causing inconvenience to people by asking them to apply for various cards.

Former Minister Jana Reddy, former MP G Vivek and MLC Shabbir Ali also participated in the dharna.

As several State-level leaders participated in the dharna, it helped in reviving the spirits of the Congress workers. The dharna began at 12 noon and lasted till evening. The Congress leaders raised various problems being faced by farmers and criticised the government for its lapses.

The party activists raised slogans against the TRS government. In the evening, the police arrested the agitating Congress leaders and released them after a short while. Earlier in the morning, Congress activists took out a rally at Karimnagar.
