Hyderabad: Telangana State government is likely to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Chhattishgarh to buy 1,000 MW of power to overcome the acute power crisis the state is facing.

Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao will visit Chhattisgarh on Thursday and discuss the issue with Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh apart from exploring the possibility of getting more power from the neighbouring State. This is being seen as counter move to blunt the Opposition onslaught when the State Assembly session would begin on November 5. The Congress party and Telugu Desam Party in Telangana have already announced that they would raise the issue during the budget session. They have also been alleging that the government’s failure to supply seven-hour free power was leading to increase in farmers suicides in the State.

TS government feels that since Chhattisgarh is a power-surplus State and has agreed to give 1,000 MW of power and help the State in meeting the power shortage till it makes own arrangements to bridge the demand-supply gap, it should enter into an MoU.

KCR had promised the people before elections that the 29th State would procure power from Chhattisgarh to meet the huge gap between demand and supply. It was also included in the party manifesto.

During his visit to Chhattisgarh, KCR will also discuss with the officials on the possibility of laying power lines between the two States to ease the heavy load on the existing power corridor.
