Rs.3,241 cr allocated to energy sector, which includes Rs.3,000 cr in subsidy

Hyderabad: Aiming to achieve ‘surplus power status’ in three years, the Telangana government accorded top priority to set up new power generation plants by allocating huge funds in the 2014-15 budget presented by the State Finance Minister E Rajendar in the Assembly on Wednesday.

Rs 1,000 crore out of Rs 1636 crore planned budget has been allocated as capital outlay for new power projects. The funds would be invested in setting up of new thermal power projects for this financial year. Another Rs 240 crore was earmarked for new and renewable energy generation projects. Rs 200 crore have been allocated to take up solar pump sets for agriculture in view of increasing power demand from the farming sector. The government already prepared plans to set up thermal power projects with an installed capacity of 6,000 MW and another 4000 MW capacity project at Ramagundam NTPC. In all, the Telangana government proposes to increase the installed capacity to 20,000 MW from the present 4800 MW in five years.

Free power supply to agriculture and power subsidy to other sectors was given priority in the allocations made for energy sector. Of the Rs 3,241 crore non plan outlay, Rs 3,000 crore has been allocated for power subsidies and Rs 224 crore as grant–in aid for Telangana Transmission Corporation Limited.

Rajendar said to tide over power crisis in the State, government took all measures including signing an MoU with the Chhattisgarh government for the supply of 1000 mw of power and regular generation of power from Nagarjuna Sagar and Srisailam hydel power units to meet the power demand especially from agriculture and domestic sectors. The Minister hoped the power supply situation would be improved in Telangana in the next two years and by 2017, the State would reach the surplus power status by supplying power to all round-the-clock.
