Hyderabad: The Telangana state government feels that the best way to protect tanks and other water bodies is to go in for social fencing. This government feels will help in promoting sustainable livelihoods and will also mitigate climate change and protect a precious resource.

Under the new proposal, the encroached tanks located in the dwelling areas in the cities and urban bodies would be restored first. A walking track would be created along the boundaries demarcated after the restoration of tanks. To protect the water bodies from further encroachments, the construction of social fencing would be taken up. Apart from the walking track trees will also be planted and lighting facility will be provided.

The State government came up with this proposal during question time in the State Legislative Council on Friday while replying to MLC P Sudhakar Reddy. Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao said that after the completion of the social fencing, the maintenance of the tanks would be handed over to Colony Welfare associations. The idea of the government is that the local communities would be given all powers to maintain and protect the tanks making them as public parks providing lung space and recreation to local people.

Appreciating the government for taking up the revival of the tanks under “ Mission Kakatiya,” Professor K Nageshwar (Independent) suggested that the government, before taking up social fencing, should clean the water bodies and ensure free flow of rain water from other sources into the tanks.

Cleaning the water bodies would provide pleasant environ for walkers. He urged the government to stop the release of industrial effluents and municipal wastage into the tanks and ensure restoration of tanks by preventing encroachments in future.

The minister responded positively to the suggestions and appealed to people to come forward and join the mission. The government would launch the social fencing scheme in Hyderabad and extend to other urban areas in a phased manner, he said.
