Karimnagar: The officials of the Excise and the Revenue Departments in the district are the two departments where officials are minting money illegally. Among the two, a special mention should be made of the Excise Department where officials get an ample opportunity to receive bribes in large amounts. They also collect their quota of bribe from every wine shop and even from toddy tappers.

There are 301 wine shops in Karimnagar district. The astounding monthly earnings of these officials of the Excise Department baffled many in the district. There is a fixed bribe rate for every work and it has reached a whopping amount of Rs 3.5 crore annually. Staff from the lowest rung to the highest level collect a certain amount of money.

According to sources, a senior official of the Excise department hailing from Kurnool was allegedly collecting bribes and donations with the help of lower run officials from the toddy tappers and others for constructing a temple in his home town.

The traders were lamenting as to why they have to give bribes and donations for temple constructions in another region. They bemoaned that they were forced to shell out Rs 5,000 as minimum amount for building a temple apart from the routine bribes that were being collected.

The Excise Superintendent and his vigilance squad conduct raids regularly but their palms are greased for remaining silent. The vexed wine shop owners after paying hefty bribes, decided to increase the price of liquor bottles to cover the lost amounts paid as bribes.

Ultimately, it can be said that the state Excise Department in the district has overtaken the Revenue Department in the collection of bribes.
