Hyderabad: The city police have identified 77 colonies as part of the 'Safe Colony' project, which are more prone to crime. Police will block access to the locality during the night. The entrance and exit will be kept under vigil. As part of the concept, the police will initially select two to three colonies under each police station limits and block all entry and exit points in these areas by placing barricades between 10 pm and 6 am every day.
Only one-exit and entry points will be kept open and security guards will operate them. Police believe that it will help in checking the movements of criminals and at the same time prevent outsiders from entering the colony, especially during night.According to police officials, the role of the police will be minimal and colony welfare associations will take the responsibility of security. Closed Circuit cameras will record images of person and his vehicle number. “The police will also conduct regular patrolling and monitor the movement of local anti-social elements,” said a higher official.
Taking security aspects into consideration, the police began assisting the local colony welfare associations in choosing the routes that are to be kept open in the night. The officials believe that before identifying the colony, a wide range of consultation with colony people and association was required to make a safe colony to avert untoward incidents. The concerned SI, along with the Inspector examine personally prior to barricading of the lanes.
Instructions are being given to the colony welfare association to engage at least two security guards at the access point. Apart from list of names and mobile numbers of the colony people, the access point should maintain 'Visitor Register'. The access will be strictly controlled at specific timings. The police also advised the colony people to have 'Association Committee' for easy redress of complainant.
“Sub-inspectors of the local police station will regularly interact with the people,” the official added.
