Mahabubabad (Warangal): Poor attendance at a government school irked the local MLA Banoth Shankar Naik, who conducted a surprise visit on Monday. The MLA laid foundation stone for developmental works at a government primary school at Mahabubabad and later visited another government primary school situated at Gummuduru village on the outskirts of the town.

During the inspection, the MLA found that there were only two students in attendance. He expressed anger at school teacher B Balaji and the officials of Education Department for the poor attendance and told them to ensure proper attendance of students. Further, the MLA found that the school has three teachers and it was not in line with the teacher-student ratio of 1:30 as per the Right to Education Act. He warned that the issue would be taken up to the notice of District Collector V Karuna for further action.

However, mandal education officer Nalla Lingaiah explained to the MLA that two out of three teachers were sent on deputation to a government primary school in a neighbouring village and currently there was only one teacher at the school. When contacted, MEO Lingaiah told The Hans India that the total student strength of the school is 23, who were being taught by teacher Balaji.

He is also headmaster of the school. He attributed the poor attendance due to Sankranti holidays. “In a couple of days, the normal strength of the students would resume as the students would return from holidays. He stated that steps would be taken to increase the attendance of the students,” the MEO said.
