Hyderabad: The Telangana regional centre of National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) has embarked on a mission to reach the uncovered locations in the State. Addressing newspersons at Press Information Bureau here on Thursday, Anil Kumar, Director, Hyderabad regional centre, NIOS said Hyderabad regional centre covers all 10 districts in the State.

Currently, there are 34 Academic Accredited Institutions (AAI) and 39 AAI got consent are yet to be established, he added. “We want to move into the remote areas of every district and provide education to everyone. There are around 1,500 students studying and efforts are being made to increase enrollment,” said Anil Kumar.

He also said the NIOS has been playing a pivotal role in providing education to all by offering the schooling anywhere anytime. He informed courses were offered at open basic education (OBE), secondary education (Class X) with a fee of Rs 1,350 and senior secondary education (Class XII) with nominal fee of Rs 1,500. Fee concession would be given for women, SC & ST students, he added.

NIOS is currently offering 101 vocational courses in various fields. Admissions to these vocational educational has different criteria and admission cycle for academic courses for stream-I will be from March 16 to September 15 and for stream-II from September 16 to March 15. The admissions are valid for five years, he added. A special provision i.e. transfer of credit system is being provided to the students. “For an instance, credits of two subjects of Board of Intermediate or Central Board of Secondary Education will be directly credited.

A student has to appear for the remaining examinations,” he added. He informed that NIOS has been offering students’ learner support centre, freedom to choose NIOS study centers, choice of subjects and credit accumulation. Practical contact programmes will be held only on holidays and Sundays. Besides, flexible scheme of admission and examination are being offered, he added.
