Hyderabad: About 60 Bajrang Dal activists were arrested by police from different parts of the twin cities under Hyderabad and Cyberabad commissionerate limits on Saturday. Most of them were caught while burning effigies as mark of protest against Valentine’s Day celebrations. Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal city secretary Shiva Ramulu had earlier warned that they would hold protests across the city against the celebrations of Valentine’s Day on February 14.

The Necklace Road leading to People’s Plaza was cordoned off till the Sanjeevaiah Park, which is known for leisure place for couples. V B Kamalasan Reddy, DCP, Central Zone visited the place in the morning. Fifteen arrests were made near Sanjeevaiah Park, 18 in Basheerbagh, 20 in Punjagutta circle and five in Shalibanda area. “We arrested them in Old City for creating nuisance on the eve of Valentine’s Day,” said V Satyanarayana, DCP South Zone.

Those who were arrested under the various police station limits were kept under the custody till evening to avert any kind of trouble in the city. There were no reports of any couples being harassed or married by the Hinduvta outfit till evening. The police maintained a tight vigil at several public places and main thoroughfares of the city to swing into action in case of any emergency.
