Hyderabad: Much to the surprise of journalists, the Telangana government on Monday restricted entry of scribes into C Block, where the Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao’s office is located. The security personnel sent out scribes who were waiting in the Chief Public Relations Officer’s chambers on the ground floor of C Block. The security staff asked the reporters to leave citing security reasons.

Being the nerve centre of the State government, the Secretariat is open for free movement of scribes of various newspapers and news channels for decades. There were no such restrictions or incidents in the past. Late Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhar Reddy had unsuccessfully tried to put curbs on the media.

YSR had to withdraw his decision to restrict the media into the Secretariat as the Opposition parties and journalists’ unions raised a hue and cry. Meanwhile, the chairman of Press Academy Allam Narayana called on the Chief Minister and discussed the issue with him.

Later, he told media that the Chief Minister had decided to release Rs 100 crore for Lawyers Welfare Fund and Rs 10 crore for Journalists Welfare Fund. He directed the Finance Department to take steps to release Rs 100 crore for advocate’s fraternity. He asked them to deposit the same as Fixed Deposit in a bank and use the interest for welfare activities.

In a meeting with Press Academy Chairman and TUWJ members, Rao assured that government would release Rs 10 crore more for the welfare fund in the coming budget. Meanwhile, CM approved a nine-member committee formed to frame guidelines for Health and Accreditation cards.
