Khammam: It is half-a-century since the Bhadrachalam Road- Kothagudem-Kovvur railway line was mooted, the project is yet to take off though administrative sanction was accorded to it. However, the Railway Budget till now failed to allot enough funds for the railway line.

Though the first survey on the 149-km-long broad gauge railway line was conducted in 1965, the government had given green signal only in 2013-14 by making an outlay of Rs 967 crore. The railroad is to be built on Railways and State government sharing cost of the project.

Apart from reducing distance between Hyderabad and Rajahmundry by 40 km, it would help develop Kothagudem and Rajahmundry as important cities.

The Railway Budget had allotted Rs 100 crore for the project and the Singareni Collieries deposited Rs 367 crore with the railways towards the State government’s share. But the project remains in cold storage. Recently Khammam MP Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy met the Union Minister for Railways Suresh Prabhu and urged him to give priority to Bhadrachalam Road-Kovvuru railway line, besides completing other pending projects.
