Nizamabad: Though the date of the Godavari Pushkarams is fast approaching, the officials concerned in riverside Basara of Adilabad district are yet to take up the works. The Godavari Pushkarams which are to be held from July 14 to July 25, 2015, require proper arrangements made on a war-footing as lakhs of pilgrims converge to take a dip in the holy river.

Telangana State Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao has decided to take up the Pushkaram arrangements as a prestigious issue as it was for the first time that the Godavari Pushkarams are going to happen after the formation of the Telangana State.

He also held discussions with Minister for Environment and Forests, Jogu Ramanna, state government’s representative K Venugopalachari and Mudhole MLA G Vittal Reddy and told them to expedite the works.

Several Hindu religious organisations have also demanded the state government to release adequate funds for organising the Pushkarams as boarding and lodging facilities have to be made on a massive scale.

According to sources, plans are afoot to take up works with Rs 50 crore at Basara to provide drinking water, health, road and rail transport facilities, bathing ghats, makeshift toilets and other infrastructure facilities on a large scale. Basara, the famous pilgrimage centre and the abode of Goddess Saraswathi, is situated at a distance of 200 km from Hyderabad. The motorists are finding it difficult to commute as the national highway stretches to 150 km and the ordinary road covers the remaining 50 km.

As such, there is a need to upgrade the 50 km road to a national highway. One-way traffic should be allowed from Dichpalli in Nizamabad district to Basara.

There is also a need to divert the traffic on the return journey from Dharmabad in Maharashtra to Bodhan.

Road widening works should be taken up immediately from Dharmabad to Basara. Similarly, the 35-km stretch of road from Nizamabad to Basara should be made into a four-lane road for the smooth flow of
traffic.

Drinking water should be provided to thousands of pilgrims and the surrounding areas should be kept clean and tidy.

Construction of bathing ghats should be taken up. Women, children and the aged should not be made to face hardships for undertaking the pilgrimage.
