Sangareddy (Medak): In order to tackle sexual assaults, eve-teasing, domestic violence and other issues, a Nirbhaya Centre was inaugurated at Sangareddy District Hospital ahead of the International Women’s Day on Thursday.

Women in distress can contact 181, Nirbhaya toll-free number, to register their complaints.

Addressing the gathering on the occasion, T Harish Rao, Minister for Irrigation, Marketing and Legislative Affairs, said that some of the applications for Kalyana Lakshmi scheme were being rejected because the girls were underage for marriages. He said it was the responsibility of the Anganwadi teachers to take initiative to prevent child marriages. He hoped that situations shouldn’t arise for women to go to Nirbhaya Centres.

Padma Devender Reddy. Deputy Speaker of Legislative Assembly, said that the ‘She Teams’ were sent to Singapore to learn laws related to women’s safety there.

Sumathi, Medak District SP, said that women need not go to the police stations to register their complaints and instead they can directly go to the hospital and contact the Nirbhaya Centre there. She assured that the Nirbhaya Centres will be opened in all sub-divisional centres soon.

After the inauguration of Nirbhaya Centre, Minister Harish Rao distributed caste, income and nativity certificates to students from various schools as part of Vidyarthulaku Revenue Nestam scheme.


According to the scheme, students will now be free from making rounds to the offices of MROs for certificates spending time and money. The tahsildar’s office will directly distribute the certificates to the schools and colleges. Utilising the certificates, students can apply for welfare schemes.

The programme was followed by Sant Shri Sevalal Maharaj’s birth anniversary celebrations and then concluded with the Minister distributing 10 lakh compensation each to families of 52 martyrs from Medak District, who had sacrificed their lives for the cause of a separate State of Telangana. Harish Rao said that apart from the monetary compensation, a government job would also be provided for a family member and that their healthcare needs and their children’s educational needs would be taken care of by the State government.

District Collector Rahul Bojja, MPs Kotha Prabhakar Reddy, Keshava Rao, MLAs Rasamai Balakishan, Madan Mohan, Chinta Prabhakar, Rama Linga Reddy, Babumohan, MLCs Ramulu Naik, Bhupal Reddy, ZP Chairman Rajamani and others were present.
