Hyderabad: Assembly Deputy Speaker Padma Devender Reddy has demanded 50 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and State Legislatures. “Women empowerment will not be possible by cornering anyone. It will become a reality only if everyone in the society joins hands and work towards achieving it”, she said.The speaker took part in the international women’s day celebrations held at Telangana Bhavan on Sunday. She recalled the key role and sacrifices made by women in Telangana statehood movement.

The injustice against women in the society will go only if girls are given good education and opportunities to stand up on their own feet so that they become financially independent, she added. The Deputy Speaker said women should be given equal opportunities in all fields, especially manufacturing sector.Prevent feticide Giving a clarion call to prevent feticide, Deputy Speaker Padma Devender Reddy on Sunday made a fervent appeal to the women in the State to protect their girls. “Let us eradicate feticide, let the girl children live and let the society help them grow and develop and compete at all levels”, she stated.

Participating in an awareness rally organised at Tank Bund by Gandhi Hospital women doctors to mark the International Women’s Day here, the Deputy Speaker expressed concern over the unabated feticide which is dangerous for the future generations.Stressing the need for creating awareness among the parents and women-folk against feticide in rural and areas, Padma said the TRS Government would come up with suitable law to protect the girl child from being killed before they are born.“The women should not indulge in killing the girl-child in the womb”, she said. Instead they should proudly give birth to the female child as it is being done in the case of male child, she said. There is dire need for protecting the girl children which is of paramount importance for maintaining balance between male and female ratio at the national level, she stated.
