Khammam: Decrying the alleged violence perpetrated on hapless tribals, leaders of CPM and CPI-ML New Democracy on Tuesday met Kothagudem RDO Amay Kumar and demanded that action should be taken against the forest officials who were responsible for the clash that took place at Marrigudem village under Chandrugonda mandal on Monday.

In all, 20 persons, mostly tribals, were injured in the clash. Former MLA and New Democracy leader Gummadi Narsaiah and CPM district secretary Pothineni Sudarshan Rao urged the RDO to stop the eviction of adivasis from their habitats as they have been dependent on Podu cultivation for over 20 years.

“These farmers’ petitions for pattas have been pending with the government, hence their lands can’t be snatched away,” the leaders said. Speaking to The Hans India, Gummadi Narsaiah said that the RDO had assured to convene a meeting with the officials of the Forest, Revenue and Police departments to discuss on the issue.

He flayed the State government for planning to get the tribals evacuated in the name of Harita Haram programme. Earlier, the leaders of the Left parties met the tribals who sustained injuries in the clash and expressed their sympathies with them. The leaders found fault with the police for registering cases against 26 tribal farmers and not even booking a single case against the forest officials. CPM district executive member Kasani Ailaiah, New Democracy leaders Chandra Aruna and K Ranga Reddy were among others present in the delegation.
