Hyderabad: Telangana Energy Department got a raw deal in the allocation of funds to strengthen the power sector in the State in 2015-16 financial year. Despite the government increasing budget outlay for the Energy Department in 2015-16 financial year, the allocations under plan have been reduced to RS 1,370 crore as against Rs 1,636 crore last year.

The total budget under plan and non-plan earmarked for the department in the new financial year is Rs 7,399 crore. Last year, Rs 4,878 crore was provided to the power sector. Rs 4,257 crore as against Rs 3,000 crore last year has been provided for power subsidy. Under the plan, Rs 1,001 crore would be spent on power projects, Rs 240 crore on new and renewable energy and another Rs 374 crore was allocated to clear loans taken by the power projects.

The officials of the Energy Department said that meagre allocations under plan would be a major constraint to take up new projects and also complete the ongoing power projects. Plans have been drawn to enhance the installed capacity to 23,675 MW from the present 4,320 MW by the end of 2018 making the State power surplus. The shortage of funds would delay the project further, the officials said.

It is proposed to take up thermal projects with an installed capacity of 6,000 MW by TSGenco, 2,000 MW by Singareni Collieries and 4000 MW by NTPC recently. Presenting the budget in the Assembly, State Finance Minister E Rajendar said despite the deficient power generation in the State, the government was committed to provide quality and reliable power to all categories of consumers and more particularly, seven hours of power supply to 19.53 lakh agricultural pump sets in the State. To tide over power crisis, the Minister, said the government had entered into an agreement with the Chhattisgarh government for the purchase of 1000 MW of power.
