Warangal: The works of ‘Mission Kakatiya’, the State government’s prestigious programme that envisages revival of tanks, have finally got underway on Thursday in Warangal.

Under the first phase of the programme in the district, as many as 1,173 tanks have been identified and prepared estimates for the restoration. However, the district administration had expected approvals for over 1,000 tanks. The State government has released funds to the tune of Rs 291 crore to take up the restoration works of 629 tanks.

In a bid to maintain transparency, the administration is taking measures to put up a board displaying the details of the works at the village panchayat offices, besides maintaining a record of photographs of the tanks before and after the commencement of works.

The progress of the works will also be made available at the gram sabhas. To ensure transparency of works, the administration is taking steps to form local committees consisting of sarpanches and public representatives. The contract agencies were warned of facing stringent action if they resort to any irregularities in the works such as maintaining quality and completing the works on time.

Speaking to officials and contract agencies, the Irrigation superintending engineer V Padma Rao said that the government will not compromise on the quality of works. The contractors will not be given extension of time to complete the works.

“The contractors will be put on ‘black list’ besides stopping their bills if they resort to any irregularities,” Rao warned. He told the farmers, who are interested to take away the silt to make prior arrangements for its transportation.
