Khammam: CPM politburo member Brinda Karat on Tuesday said that she will stand by the Adivasis, who were facing displacement due to the construction of Polavaram project.Karat, who toured Nellipaka, Kunavaram and VR Puram (East Godavari district), gave a patient hearing to the locals when they poured out their problems.

The tribals sought the help of Karat in stopping the Polavaram project. They said that they have no objection to the project if the height of the dam is reduced.They said that they were facing too many problems after merging their region with Andhra Pradesh. The tribals said their children were not treated as locals in East Godavari district.

The applications of the local youths for the DSC jobs have been rejected by the East Godavari district administration on the pretext of non-locals, they pointed out. The villagers further said they were emotionally attached to Khammam district and they don’t accept the merger that took place. “We have to spend a lot besides travelling about 200 km to reach Rampachodavaram and Kakinada,” the tribals said.

Stating that she was on a mission to learn the problems of Adivasis, Brinda Karat said that the CPM is working on a strategy to exert pressure on the Central government for the resolution of tribals’ problems. Senior leader Midiam Babu Rao, Bhadrachalam MLA Sunnam Rajaiah and party leader M Nageswara Rao were among others present.
