Nearly 300 government primary schools in Karimnagar District were shut down in last 3 years. The trend in northern Telangana district of Karimnagar is that in pursuit of English medium education, parents do not want their children to go to government primary schools. Many more are on verge of closure due to poor student enrollment.


Official statistics reveal that there are 148 primary schools and three upper primary schools with a strength ranging from one to 10 students, 562 primary schools and 25 UPS with student strength of 20-30.


There are 356 PS, 73 UPS and 15 high schools with strength of 31-50 students and 34 high schools in the district with strength of 51-75 students. The number of students studying in private educational institutions is very high compared to that of government schools.


Acknowledging that there was a steady decline in enrollment of students in government schools, DEO K. Lingaiah said that parents have lost confidence in government schools and their expectations have increased too. Further, he said that government schools failed to provide quality education as there was low commitment among teachers.


Those who are studying in government primary and upper primary schools are unable to read and write. On the other hand, students in private schools were doing well in exams and were much ahead in terms of learning, said Lingaiah.
