Hyderabad: The Telangana government on Tuesday claimed that it had not taken any unilateral decision over levy of taxes on vehicles coming from Andhra Pradesh nor was it a new one. Talking to reporters here, the Telangana Minister for Transport, Mahender Reddy said that while GO MS No 15 was issued on Monday, GO MS No 43 was issued on June 1, 2014 since the State had been bifurcated. Following a PIL, the High Court ordered that no tax be levied on vehicles coming from Andhra Pradesh till March 31, 2015.

According to Road Transport Authority (RTA) officials, the accruals from the collection of tax which is done every three months will be Rs 70 to Rs 80 crore. Any vehicle that does not pay the MV tax would be seized. Interestingly, the APSTRC buses plying between the two States will not be affected by this GO since the corporation is yet to be divided. The officials said as per the TS Motor Vehicle Act tax for all India permit mass transport vehicles would be Rs 3,675 per seat and Rs 2,625 for vehicles with State permit.

Private operators fear that people will stop travelling in private buses as they have to bear an additional burden of Rs 200 per ticket. In case of heavy goods vehicles, the tax would vary from Rs 2,970 to Rs 5740. Similarly, the tax on medium goods vehicles and light goods vehicles would be Rs 1,950 to Rs 2,440 and Rs 430 to Rs 1,280 respectively.

According to a transporter, this would affect even the movement of tender coconuts whose rates would be jacked up as their supplies would be affected. Similarly, the mango market will also be adversely affected as daily a large number of trucks come from Andhra Pradesh to the city markets in Hyderabad.
