It looks like Nalgonda has earned the dubious distinction of becoming a centre for crime in the recent past. While it had recorded the highest number of rape cases, the recent incidents of arrest of interstate gang of dacoits and killing of two police personnel Mettu Lingaiah and Mahesh at Suryapet had come as a major shock for the Telangana Government.
OCTOPUS drafted to grapple with the case
Hyderabad: It looks like Nalgonda has earned the dubious distinction of becoming a centre for crime in the recent past. While it had recorded the highest number of rape cases, the recent incidents of arrest of interstate gang of dacoits and killing of two police personnel Mettu Lingaiah and Mahesh at Suryapet had come as a major shock for the Telangana Government.
Stirred by the shocking incident, the entire police administration, including Home Minister Naini Narsimha Reddy, Minister for Power Jagadish Reddy, and DGP swung into action. With the police yet to come to a conclusion, the state government has decided to involve the OCTOPUS (Organisation for Counter Terrorist Operations). This has come as a big surprise since OCTOPUS is an elite counter terrorism unit of the TS Police.Interestingly, on Thursday morning the DGP ruled out any possibility of Maoist hand in the incident.
At no point of time did the police suspect any terrorist angle to the incident. Throughout the day the DGP and the home minister maintained that it was the handiwork of some interstate gangs from UP or Bihar. The police also feel that there is a close link to the firing incident of Wednesday morning that took place at Saroornagar in which an unidentified person shot at and injured an astrologer, who is an accused in a murder case.
Despite state governments’ claim of bringing in reforms to improve policing, incidents of firing now and then are being reported. So far in almost all the cases the response of the police has been lackadaisical in combating the crime. A regular inspection of the vehicles by a group of police at Suryapet bus stand past midnight on Thursday has further exposed the police department's unpreparedness and pusillanimity.
Even before the cops could come to a conclusion after scrutinising the CCTV footage obtained from the nearby places at Saroonagar, the Suryapet incident has taken place. The police suspect that the dacoits might have reached Hyderabad in a private vehicle and boarded a bus from Chaderghat.
The video footage in that area is also being scrutinized. Though the officials are tight-lipped over the identity of the gangs, it is believed that they belong to Irfan or Toofani gangs. This incident poses a big challenge for the TRS government since Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao had taken up a massive programme to convert Nalgonda into a tourist hub by developing the Yadagirigutta temple.
