Karimnagar: Satavahana University, which was already facing troubles, has again in the news following the attack on English teacher Dr P V Laxmiprasad by students, allegedly for not giving minimum marks. The university remained closed for the last 10 days. Enraged over the incident, university teachers launched a strike, following which authorities suspended 24 students involved in the attack.

Faculty members also lodged a complaint with the police, who registered cases against about 22 students. To probe the entire episode, authorities constituted a fact-finding committee which reportedly submitted its report to the Vice-Chancellor K Veera Reddy. Varsity authorities asked the students to vacate the campus after closing the institution on March 27.

This is not the first incident where officials had to close the varsity. In the beginning of the present academic year, authorities had closed the campus for a week in the wake of protests by students against the proposal to privatise messes and demanding improvement of infrastructure. While students blamed the administration for not providing minim facilities to continue their studies, authorities found fault with the student unions for disturbing the academics and interrupting students those who were serious in their studies.

Speaking to the Hans India, SFI district president, Thirupati blamed the authorities for running classes in science department after closing hostels. How the student could attend classes without mess facility, he said and demanded the varsity officials take measures to open hostel mess. A faculty member said, on condition of anonymity, that the science college mess was closed as the students had not paid mess bills.

“How is it possible to run the hostel without funds” he said. Stating that there was no relation between the closer of campus and science college issue, Art and Social Sciences College principal Surepalli Sujatha said that they had closed the university for the safety of the students, who went emotional. She termed the attack on teacher as “shameful” and “undemocratic”.
