Hyderabad: In order to achieve excellence in the higher education, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has decided to regulate the funds to the universities and colleges, annually. “We did not look for excellence during last 60 years. We have given money to whatever universities have asked for, be it infrastructure or add on courses, seminars etc, without putting in any conditions. But those days are over now.

Next 15 years we want to put conditions to bring in excellence and accountability,” UGC Vice-Chairman Prof. H Devaraj told the vice-chancellors of state and central universities during one day workshop on the Choice Based Credit System at University (CBCS) of Hyderabad on Tuesday. The UGC Vice-Chairman said that half of the Commission grants are being spent on the central universities and quality is expected from varsities.

“President of India wanted to see one Indian University in the top 200 varsities in the world. I wish University of Hyderabad should come in the list of top 200 universities,” he added. On the CBCS, the Commission Vice-Chairman said that Universities have full freedom to decide the framework for the CBCS.

“We do not want to encroach on the autonomy of the universities or board of studies in deciding the framework. We will only give a template of CBCS; the universities can make changes to it. But CBCS has to be implemented by all the universities from the next academic year,” Devaraj added.
